DESCRIPTION | This study-unit aims to develop knowledge and skills in relation to the management of a patient with a traumatic musculoskeletal injury in primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare systems. This study-unit is based on principles of trauma care and fracture management. Furthermore, this study-unit addresses knowledge and skills in relation to soft tissue and nerve injury. This is further addressed through the assessment, planning, management and evaluation of complications in musculoskeletal traumatic injuries. The psychological and social impact on the individual's well-being and quality of life are critically discussed, following a traumatic injury and potential disability. Students are expected to develop knowledge and skills in relation to the comprehensive nursing management of patients with traumatic injuries. Care of the patient in relation to: -Multiple trauma -Pelvic injuries -Upper limb injuries -Lower limb injuries -Foot and ankle injuries -Spinal Cord Injuries -Sports Injuries -Fragility Fractures Content in relation to: -Fracture management -Immobilisation devices -Complications of traumatic injuries -Complications of Spinal Cord Injuries -Nutrition and Hydration in trauma -Infection Prevention and Control in trauma -Pediatric and gerontological considerations Study-Unit Aims: To provide students with knowledge required to manage a patient with a traumatic musculoskeletal injury. - To enable students to develop skills related to assessment of risks and management of complications related to musculoskeletal traumatic injuries. - To provide students with advanced orthopaedic nursing skills related to traumatic injuries. - To discuss the management of multiple trauma and life-threatening injuries. - To focus on how individualised orthopaedic nursing care supports an individual’s recovery following a traumatic injury. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Define trauma and critically discuss the effects of traumatic injury. - Describe the kinematics and mechanisms of injury and discuss their significance to patient management. - Describe diverse traumatic fractures and their respective nursing care. - Discuss the nursing management of a patient who sustained a traumatic injury namely, fractures, soft-tissue injuries and spinal cord injuries. - Discuss the perioperative nursing care of patients undergoing surgery after a traumatic injury. - Discuss the nursing management of older adults with fragility fractures. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Define trauma and critically discuss the effects of traumatic injury.
