DESCRIPTION This study-units aims to develop knowledge and skills in relation to the nursing management of individuals with orthopaedic conditions managed through elective or conservative means. This study-unit provides an evidence base for the practice of orthopaedic elective surgical nursing care. The focus of this study-unit is the care provision and key principles of elective surgery rooted in the principles of safe and high-quality service delivery, positive patient outcomes and rapid recovery. Furthermore, this study-unit delves into the oncological aspect of the musculoskeletal system over a lifespan, taking into consideration psychological and palliative aspects of care.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To consolidate the assessment of patients undergoing elective surgical procedures.
- To provide students with knowledge required to manage a patient with acute or chronic musculoskeletal diseases and conditions.
- To provide students with the knowledge and skills required to care for patients with tumors of the musculoskeletal system that includes surgical and oncological management.
- To enable students to develop skills related to assessment and management of complications related to musculoskeletal diseases and elective surgery.
- To provide students with advanced orthopaedic nursing skills related orthoses and braces.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe knowledge related to the pathophysiology of rheumatological and orthopaedic diseases, and its significance to nursing care.
- Discuss the nursing management of individuals with orthopaedic conditions and diseases, undergoing elective surgery or managed conservatively.
- Discuss the perioperative nursing care of patients undergoing spinal surgery and arthroplasty surgery.
- Describe the moving and handling techniques for individuals undergoing spinal surgery.
- Critically discuss patient support and advice to enhance recovery prior to admission and on discharge.
- Analyze patient data to identify potential complications related to elective orthopaedic conditions, managed electively or conservatively.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify the risk factors, assessment and management of complications following elective surgeries and in oncological disease.
- Critically evaluate educational strategies and advice for elective orthopaedic disorders in primary, secondary and tertiary care.
- Apply non-pharmacological interventions in the care of patients with rheumatological and orthopaedic diseases.
- Critically evaluate the impact of specialist nursing on patient care for individuals undergoing elective procedures.
- Develop a comprehensive evidence-based nursing care plan for patients with rheumatological and elective orthopaedic disorders.
- Design a patient education intervention for individuals undergoing elective orthopaedic procedures, promoting self-care and optimal recovery outcomes.
- Demonstrate competency in the use of orthopaedic braces and orthoses.
