DESCRIPTION | - This study-unit offers an in-depth exploration of the patient perioperative journey, examining the vital role perioperative nurses play at each key stage. From admission and preoperative preparation to postoperative care and discharge, students establish the multifaceted nature of caring for surgical patients, as a commitment to providing a holistic view of the patient experience. - This study-unit adopts an inquiry-based learning framework with a dynamic blend of theoretical knowledge and clinical experience. Rooted in evidence-based perspectives, the study unit entices students to critically analyse and apply the latest evidence in intraoperative nursing, facilitating a prevention-orientation role through forward-thinking in a continuous adaptive manner to patient care. - The study-unit also covers strategies applicable in practice contexts to facilitate a seamless transition of theoretical knowledge, providing students with the necessary specialised knowledge and expertise to effectively navigate the complexities of the intraoperative setting. - With a deliberate emphasis on general principles of surgical practice, rather than the management of specific conditions, students are equipped with a broad foundation that can be universally applied across diversity in: patient populations, clinical scenarios, complexity, and multi-specialty surgeries. Study-Unit Aims: - To recognise the inherent challenges in delivering optimal perioperative care to a wide range of patient groups (high risk procedures; cardiac, respiratory and neurological conditions; chronic medical conditions; acute trauma). - To acquire knowledge to initiate and implement evidence-informed perioperative care, considering the unique aspects of the age-extremes specific needs and tailoring care accordingly. - To prepare students for evolving roles within nursing that demand a dynamic and adaptable critical inquiry, knowledge, skills, and competencies, in handling a range of perioperative clinical scenarios. - To enhance proficiency of how multi-disciplinary care is organized to meet the diverse challenges posed by patients with various co-morbidities undergoing different surgical procedures with varying degrees of required patient needs. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • Identify the role of specialist nurse in comprehensively managing patients across the perioperative cycle, applicable to both elective and emergency anaesthesia and surgery. • Synthesise and apply diverse perioperative nursing roles, adeptly implementing core principles of intraoperative or perianaesthesia nursing practice in complex, time-critical surgeries with challenging medical conditions and effectively addressing deteriorating body systems. • Recognise the concepts and principles of intraoperative techniques including: patient assessment and monitoring of respiratory, cardiovascular, haemodynamic and neurological states; homeostasis, fluid and electrolyte balance, and principles of haemostasis. • Enhance insight into perioperative pharmacological therapies, including anaesthetic agents, and pain management strategies. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • Critique the delivery of patient-centred care in the context of anaesthesia and perioperative nursing, specifically focusing on complex, acute, high-risk, and age-diverse patient populations. • Interpret how and why certain approaches to anaesthesia (general, sedation and regional anaesthesia techniques) and their mechanism of action in addressing patients with a wide variety of clinical complexities and comorbidities. • Address or prevent abnormalities as they arise - Normothermia, safety precautions in patient positioning, and which are exacerbated with tools and equipment used • Evaluate the evidence base for clinical decisions in supporting cardio-respiratory physiology, pain and nervous systems. • Enhance the student’s ability to articulate the rationale for updates in evidence based practices within perioperative contexts, including: workflow and design considerations of the perioperative environment to address challenges arising from asepsis; ergonomics and patient positioning; interventional and image guided procedures; minimally invasive surgery; haemostasis, wound care.
