DESCRIPTION | This unit is a comprehensive overview of paediatric conditions encountered in the various practice settings of concern to occupational therapists. It will review epidemiological aspects, clinical manifestations, medical and surgical treatment options; outcomes and prognostic factors. The following topics/conditions will be considered: 1. Neonatology 2. Nutrition 3. Infections 4. Safety 4. Safety 5. Respiratory and Allergy 6. Cardiovascular 7. Gastroenterology 8. Renal 9. Haematology 10. Endocrine 11. Neurology 12. Development (1) 13. Development (2) 14. Behaviour Study-unit Aims The unit aims to impart basic medical knowledge to the students in the area of paediatrics which will serve as one of the prerequisite for later studies in the field of occupational therapy. Students gain important insights into significant conditions met in clinical practice. Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Understand in detail paediatric diseases met in acute, sub-acute and rehabilitation settings of interest to occupational therapists - Describe signs and symptoms of different paediatric conditions 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify treatment options for different paediatric conditions - Identify expected prognostic features of paediatric conditions - Differentiate between the various paediatric conditions - Take a client history - Carry out a basic assessment of clients in this domain Main Text/s and any supplementary readings - Lissauer, T. & Clayden,G.
