DESCRIPTION | This study-unit provides students with hands-on experience in the application of neurological occupational therapy intervention in the adult client-group. It is the opportunity to practice assessment and treatment techniques for various conditions with patients under the supervision of tutors. Students gain clinical reasoning skills in real clinical situations with client and client groups. Study-unit Aims: - To guide and train students in the assessment of the range of parameters of significance in the neurorehabilitation domain including neuromotor, perpetual and cognitive factors. - To help students appreciate how neurological deficits impact on occupational performance. - To enable students to select the appropriate treatment approaches and techniques to address neurological deficits. - To enable students to appreciate the value of various intervention strategies that address environmental and occupational adaptation to help compensate for neurological dysfunction. - To facilitate the development of an advisory, consultative and educational role with clients and carers for this particular domain of service. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Clinically diagnose the different presentations of neurorehabilitation clients from an OT perspective. - Select the appropriate frame of reference to apply with different client impairment groups. - Obtain a knowledge of how to keep abreast of developments in the field and become aware of the most contemporary issues related to neuro-rehabilitation and evidence-based practice. - Identify contra-indications of treatment in specific situations and conditions. - Inform clients and carers on local services and resources. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate a good understanding of the assessment methods and tools required. - Carry out a detailed assessment, present concise reports that reflect good background knowledge and critical thinking. - Handle patients safely; provide appropriate environment to optimize performance. - Develop individual treatment goals and programmes that are progressive and focus on the appropriate performance areas as indicated by client-centred goals. - Prescribe and demonstrate correct use of assistive equipment to clients/carers. - Re-evaluate and modify programmes according to need.
