DESCRIPTION | This study-unit provides a unique opportunity for students to work with children through the occupational therapy process evaluating childhood occupations in the context of the home, school and community. It gives students the opportunity to work directly with the child and family under the superviion of specialist Occupational Therapists throughout the assessment and intervention process across the lifespan of children and youth. Study-Unit Aims: The aims of the study-unit are to give the student a sound practcal experience and opportunity to be involved in and work with children through the whole therapeutic process from beginning to end under the guidance of supervisors, who are specialists in this area of practice. The students will have the opportunity to provide occupational therapy intervention in the settings of the clinic and the school in line with what is expected from entry level occupational therapists but with the additional benefit of having experienced supervisors who coach and mentor the students and shape their learning whilst supporting students to integrate theory with practice. The purpose of the study-unit is to enable the student to translate the knowledge learnt in other study-units into practice, and gain exposure to other aspects of professional practie with children and youth. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate, in theory and practice, the importance of focusing on occupations in occupational therapy assessment and intervention; - Complete a basic paediatric OT assessment relevant to the age, context, and needs of the child; - Write realistic and relevant long-term goals; - Write SMART and measurable short-term goals; - Demonstrate confidence and competence in relating to and communicating with parents and families in line with set criteria; - Gain knowledge and skills in collaborative working; - Gain practical knowledge and application of school-based approaches and strategies. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Observe and Document Structured and Unstructured Observation in both the clinical setting and the school; - Adminisiter some of the more common standardised assessments under guidance of supervisors; - Carry out non standardised testing in areas of sensory motor skills; - Perform basic clinical observations related to sensory integration and praxia; - Practice Neurodevelopmental Strategies relevant to paediatric practice; - Practice Sensory Motor Strategies relevant to paediatric practice; - Plan and run group intervention sessions; - Write long term goals; - Write short term goals with a focus on occupation; - Write a full paediatric occupational therapy report; - Write follow up notes; - Design and draw up home/school recommendations; - Prepare and execute whole classroom based sessions with students that foucs on universal strategies; - Prepare and execute parents meeting in school and with families both in person and online; - Provide basic recommendations on environmental modifications , paediatric tools and equipment that can be used in the home and school.
