TITLE An Introduction to Practice Management

DESCRIPTION This study-unit is designed to teach the fundamentals of developing and running a successful dental practice. Areas covered include the broader issues of dental practice, including team work and financial management, Medical Council and local legislation, patients' rights and confidentiality, IT and data protection.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of this study-unit are to:

- Prepare the student to be able to successfully work in a team environment, providing a quality service whilst observing patients' rights;
- Reinforce the dental surgery assistant's role and responsibilities in professional health care settings, working in both the private and public sector;
- Reinforce the principles of managing and maintaining a safe working environment;
- Teach the student how to communicate effectively and in a professional manner with patients;
- Teach the student the principles of stock control in a dental practice;
- Teach the student the principles of appointment scheduling in a dental practice.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss his/her role in a dental team environment, in both the private and public sector;
- Discuss the principles of a quality service whilst observing patients' rights;
- Discuss effective professional communication skills when dealing with patients and other members of staff;
- Discuss in detail the principles of managing and maintaining a safe working environment;
- Identify and explain current best practice guidelines (evidence-based practice);
- Discuss compliance as applied to dental practice;
- Discuss the principles of stock control in a dental practice;
- Discuss the principles of appointment scheduling in a dental practice;
- Define appraisal and recognise how appraisal and performance reviews can be beneficial for advancing in their careers;
- Review decision making processes, enabling students to reflect on their involvement in decision-making and the span of control that they have within the practice which they form part of.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Recognise their contribution towards, and participate in the running of a successful dental practice;
- Identify appropriate technology and ergonomics in dental practice;
- Maintain a safe working environment, collaborating with other members of the dental team with regards to health and safety and clinical risk assessment and management;
- Protect confidential patient data;
- Work effectively in a team environment;
- Recognise their duties as well as their rights within the management structure of the practice they form part of;
- Recognise different contracts of employment and the legislation pertaining to employment in the public and private sector;
- Recognise current best practice guidelines and legislation, and abide by relevant policies.

ADDITIONAL NOTES Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below.
