DESCRIPTION This introductory study-unit exposes dental hygiene students to the foundation knowledge of professionalism and professional development. It focuses on professional image, communication skills, teamwork in health care and personal growth in continual professional development.

Dental Hygiene Theory I offers students an introduction to patient care and oral maintenance care, ergonomic posture and periodontal instrumentation. Furthermore, students will be expected to attend clinics and observe clinical procedures during patient care.

Study-Unit Aims:

Dental Hygiene-Clinical Practice I aims at:

- providing an understanding of the dental hygienists' role and responsibilities in clinical settings.
- developing professionalism in clinical environment.
- introducing basic clinical skills for clinical practice.
- introducing application of behavioural sciences in clinical practice.
- integrating knowledge and theory into dental hygiene practice.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Practice clinical abilities through patient simulations.
- Discuss the importance of ergonomic positioning in clinical setting.
- Discuss the use and function of periodontal instruments in clinical situations.
- Discuss different clinical procedures.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Analyze the dental hygiene process of care model as it relates to clinical contexts.
- Demonstrate sound ergonomic positioning in clinical setting.
- Integrate psychmotor skills on patient simulators.
- use all periodontal instruments on patient simulators.
- Apply correct finger position in the modified pen-grasp technique.
- Adopt ergonomic positioning to prevent musculoskeletal problems.
- Perform exercises for improved hand strength.
- Provide chairside assistance.
- Deliver oral hygiene instructions (practice placements).
- Apply disclosing agents (practice placements).
- Apply mechanisms of infectious disease transmission prevention.
- Demonstrate the basic life support (BLS) protocol and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
