DESCRIPTION In this study-unit, students start their clinical work with patients. The students will manage patients' treatment plans, periodontal treatments under supervision and in collaboration with dental staff.

Study-unit Aims:

This unit aims to:

- provide students with an opportunity to further develop an understanding of the role of the dental hygienist in a clinical setting;
- develop students' professionalism while providing realistic dental hygiene services for individuals and groups;
- provide students with an opportunity to integrate evidence-based dentistry in clinical settings;
- foster the integration of knowledge and theory into dental hygiene practice.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- compare and contrast theories and concepts used in clinical situations;
- explain principles related to the administration of local anesthesia;
- demonstrate various radiographic techniques and apply knowledge of radiographic interpretation to dental hygiene practice;
- interpret patients' data to develop dental hygiene diagnosis and care plan;
- provide dental hygiene services to patients in clinical settings;
- participate in the management of oral diseases;
- collaborate with dental surgeons and other professionals in providing quality health care.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- collect data, medical and dental histories;
- measure periodontal pockets, carry out assessments;
- record and chart gingival and periodontal indices;
- administer comprehensive advice on oral hygiene according to the patients' needs;
- carry out scaling and polishing of teeth;
- remove supra and sub gingival calculus;
- apply fluoride solutions and fissure sealants;
- promote oral health (practice placements) on a one is to one basis when treating patients;
- interpret radiographs;
- administer local infiltration anaesthesia;
- use clinical materials to help in controlling oral diseases;
- use evidence-based knowledge in decision-making.

ADDITIONAL NOTES A pass in this study-unit is required before registering for ORC3116.

Please note that a pass in each assessment component is obligatory for an overall pass mark to be awarded.

Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below.
