DESCRIPTION The educational goal of this study-unit is to build the concepts discussed in ORC4036. In this study-unit the emphasis is on the oral manifestations of systemic and local disease in the ageing adult. The student is further trained in the management and treatment of the elderly adult in various settings.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to further teach the student the complexity of ageing, patient management and the importance of dentistry in total patient care. The student is trained to work as part of a patient management team in the dental clinic as well as in a variety of settings such as senior day centres and residential homes for the elderly.

The student will be able to evaluate the elderly person holistically and be able to develop and execute a comprehensive treatment plan.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain the oral manifestations of systemic disease;
- Discuss the impact of oral disease on the quality of life in elderly patients;
- Discuss the role of auxiliaries and carers in providing the basic skills of oral hygiene for the frail and dependant aged;
- Describe the challenges of providing domiciliary care.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Obtain a thorough general, medical, dental and social history;
- Perform intra- and extra-oral examination;
- Identify oral manifestations of systemic disease;
- Refer elderly patients to the appropriate health care provider;
- Assess oral health related quality of life in elderly patients by means of appropriate tools;
- Train auxiliaries and carers in the basic skills of oral hygiene for the frail and dependant aged;
- Suggest strategies to overcome barriers to dental care for the elderly patients;
- Provide comprehensive dental treatment in patients' homes and long-term care settings.

ADDITIONAL NOTES Pre-requisite Study-unit: ORC4036

Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below.
