DESCRIPTION | This study-unit covers the teaching and fieldwork in dental public health. It consists of formal lectures and fieldwork in a community setting. Independent study is also factored in. This study-unit builds on the knowledge acquired during previous years with a particular focus on the ability to apply the principles of dental public health in a population based on evidence based practice. This unit also explores European and global perspectives in public health, sustainable development goals and inequalities in health Study-unit Aims: During this academic year the student will acquire further skills to integrate all study-units in the course, building on the knowledge acquired in the previous years. The emphasis of this study-unit is to encourage students to apply the principles of dental public health, understand global perspectives and trends in dental diseases. Further teaching includes the different preventive strategies available to promote oral health and bring about a reduction in disease at a population level. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Discuss the range of information needed when planning dental services - Distinguish between the complex interactions between oral health, nutrition and general health that can have an impact on dental care and diseases. - Discuss trends in oral diseases. - Discuss inequalities in health. - Define and discuss quality of life. - Discuss sustainable development goals. - Revise principles of dental public health and health promotion. - Learn about good communication and advocacy. - Understand the role of the oral health care professional in prevention of non-communicable diseases. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Design a strategy to tackle oral health problems. - Practice evidence-based dentistry. - Link clinical practice to dental public health. - Promote the common risk factor approach. - Communicate effectively with patients, health professionals and other relevant authorities involved in healthcare. - Advocate and practice sustainable dentistry. - Apply the principles of public health to design strategies for tackling and preventing disease. - Apply the general preventive strategies.. ADDITIONAL NOTES | Pre-requisite Study-units: ORC2010, ORC3010, ORC4010 Please note that a pass in all assessment components is obligatory for an overall pass mark to be awarded. Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below. |
