CODE ORC4200

TITLE Fixed Prosthodontics

UM LEVEL 04 - Years 4, 5 in Modular UG or PG Cert Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 7

DEPARTMENT Oral Rehabilitation and Community Care

DESCRIPTION This study-unit presents fixed prosthodontics as a treatment option to restore the single tooth that is damaged by the carious or traumatic processes. It also introduces the treatment options available to restore patients with single or multiple gaps in their dentition. It will explore the diverse conventional tooth-supported fixed prostheses available for rehabilitating the missing tooth.

The student is taken through all the necessary clinical steps involved to become competent in this field. This includes accurate tooth preparation which is first demonstrated on phantom teeth following exposure to a real situation. In addition, the importance of accurate impression taking along with temporization is theoretically described and practically demonstrated.

Novel prosthetic designs as well as emerging biomaterials and cementation techniques will be discussed. Focus is given to the wide variety of materials available to the prosthodontist/dentist to deliver a durable fixed restoration to the patient while emphasizing the advantages and disadvantages in each case.

The Fixed Prosthodontics study-unit also provides an accurate description of the modern methods involved in registering a patient's occlusal relationship. This allows the student to understand the importance of accurate transfer of information from the mouth to the dental laboratory.

Attendance to practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 92% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Discuss the various options available when restoring damaged teeth with direct and indirect methods. Students will be able to determine when to rehabilitate missing teeth with conventional tooth supported or implants and to communicate clearly their advantages and disadvantages;
- Deliver clinically simple conventional bridgework using a variety of techniques available. This includes conventional and digital methods;
- Be knowledgeable in contemporary biomaterials and associated cementation techniques;
- Understand the workflows in conventional and digital methods when providing single tooth and multiple teeth fixed prosthodontics;
- Communicate to the patient the importance of recall and post-treatment care when fixed prostheses are delivered.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss the theoretical and practical aspects involved in fixed prosthodontics, especially the clinical aspects in tooth preparation;
- Describe the importance of accurate impression taking techniques - overview of materials and handling, and also the digital workflows;
- Discuss the importance of fabricating a functional temporary restoration- overview of techniques for construction and materials used will be demonstrated clinically;
- Clearly prescribe the appropriate prosthetic restoration indicated in a clinical situation after in depth consideration of the patient's oral health status, financial situation and expectations;
- Discuss the role of occlusion in fixed prostheses;
- Discuss the maintenance of fixed prostheses.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Provide patients with treatment plans that include conventional or implant supported prostheses;
- Analyze dental imaging and identify the appropriate treatment plan to restore missing teeth;
- Describe the materials used in fixed prosthodontics;
- Demonstrate practical skills in conventional fixed prosthodontics, such as preparation and temporization of teeth;
- Take impressions to fabricate fixed prostheses, using conventional and digital methods;
- Educate patients on the maintenance and care of fixed prostheses.
