DESCRIPTION | This study-unit reviews the principles of oral rehabilitation in the older adult, with particular emphasis on the disciplines of prosthodontics, preventive dentistry, periodontics, endodontics and operative dentistry. Study-unit Aims: The aims of the study-unit are to: - Present and apply the principles of preventive dentistry and dental public health in the elderly population; - Present and apply the latest evidence with regard to promoting health and preventing disease and improving quality of life of the elderly community; - Link oral and general health and ‘putting the mouth back in the body’; - Provide the student with an in-depth knowledge of the principles of Periodontics in particular with emphasis to older adults; - Provide the student with an in-depth knowledge of the principles of Prosthodontics with particular emphasis on the partially edentulous older adults. The fully edentulous state will also be discussed; - Review the impact of aging on dental hard tissues and the pulp complex; - Discuss the principles of minimally invasive dentistry in the older adult. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Outline prevention programmes relevant for the older population, both on an individual and community level; - Discuss the principles of domiciliary preventive dentistry; - Discuss the principles of prosthodontic, endodontic and periodontic treatment for the older adult; - Discuss periodontic and endodontic management and prosthetic considerations for the functionally independent, frail and functionally dependent older adults; - Discuss treatment planning and oral rehabilitation of the older adult's dentition; - Describe the aetiology and incidence of caries and tooth wear in the older dentate population and relate this to the principle of minimally invasive dentistry whereby effective, customized prevention parallels operative intervention; - Discuss the general principles of cavity preparation and establish how they are modified according to the type of disease and quality of tooth tissue found in an aged dentition; - Recall the properties of materials used in operative dentistry and describe how these influence the selection and clinical application of such materials in the older dentate population. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Integrate prevention within all aspects of dentistry; - Design a strategy to tackle oral health problems in the older adult; - Link clinical practice to dental public health; - Apply evidence-based preventive treatment at all levels in the provision of dental services to older adults; - Preserve the elderly’s oral health related quality of life; - Promote health for the elderly at an individual and population level; - Treatment plan and rehabilitate older adult's dentition by applying principles of prosthodontics, endodontics and periodontics; - Recognize the role of operative dentistry in bringing about enhanced oral health, as well as improved general well-being for elderly patients; - Select and perform the most appropriate operative treatment modality tailored to the needs of the aged dentition; - Integrate effectively the wide selection of available dental materials, techniques and technologies in the practice of operative dentistry within the older dentate population.
