DESCRIPTION | This study-unit builds on the unit "The health and safety legal framework" and thus enables students to get an overview of the relevant legislation related to Health and Safety in the Maltese and European context. More specifically, the unit focuses on specific health and safety Legal Notices, European directives and relevant case-law. Study-Unit Aims: The main aim is to build on the knowledge and skills gained within the unit "The health and safety legal framework" by providing students with an applied understanding of specific legal notices and European directives. In particular, the unit aims to provide students with knowledge of local legal notices pertaining to the: protection of young workers and maternity; regulations relating to hoists and lifts, buildings, power presses, confined spaces, first aid and factory welfare; the protection against the risks from, noise, vibration, optical radiation, chemical agents, asbestos and to back injury; and major accident hazards. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: a) Describe and evaluate European Law related to Health and Safety at work during a final assessment. b) State and discuss local legal notices pertaining to OHS during a final assessment including:   - LEGAL NOTICE 91 of 2000 (amended) Protection of Young Persons at Work Places Regulations [S.L.424.10];   - L.N. 92 of 2000 (amended) Protection of Maternity at Work Places Regulations [S.L.424.11];   - L.N. 47 of 1964 (amended) Work Places (Hoists and Lifts) Regulations [S.L.424.05];   - L.N. 96 of 1968. Building (Safety) Regulations [S.L.424.06];   - L.N. 25 of 1984 (amended) Power Presses Regulations [S.L.424.08];   - L.N. 52 of 1986 (amended) Work Places (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations [S.L.424.09];   - L.N. 11 of 2002 (amended) Work Place (First Aid) Regulations [S.L.424.13];   - L.N. 35 of 2003. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: a) Apply understanding of the covered legal notices to everyday occupational health and safety practice; b) Interpret and communicate legal liability to managers, employers and contractors; c) Provide statutory evidence to defend or support an OHS preventive action; d) Act in court as a witness or expert witness.
