DESCRIPTION The study-unit exposes law students to Malta's legal and regulatory framework pertaining to employment relations and employment conditions.

The historical, social and philosophical considerations of employment regulation are introduced, particularly the link between social policy and social legislation.

Title 1 (employment relations) of the Employment and Industrial Relations Act (Cap 452, Laws of Malta) is examined in detail and subsequently students are familiarised with subsidiary legislation under the same act, namely national standard orders and sectoral regulation orders.

Ultimately the vital link between employment regulation and the social services framework is inspected.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aims of the study unit are to:

- Expose law students to Title 1 of the Employment and Industrial Relations Act (Cap 452) which is concerned with conditions of employment, delving further into the main national standard orders and sectoral regulation orders under the Act to provide a comprehensive knowledge of employment conditions regulation in the legal order.
- Appreciate the philosophical and social considerations neccessitating the regulation employment relations and conditions
- Provide an understanding of the historical context of employment relations
- Grasp the important interrelation between employment regulation and the social security framework.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- write on employment and social legislation in the Maltese legal order;
- identify the objectives and essential elements of employment regulation and its application in sustaining conditions of work;
- discuss the link between employment law and social services law;
- explain the rules regulating employment legislation.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- guide ones self and others with regards to employment conditions in Malta
- keep up to date with the evolving employment regulation and social services regulation scene
- apply employment legislation in practical situations as a practitioner
- critically examine practical situations in employment relations
