DESCRIPTION | Students are expected to write a dissertation of around 10,000-12,000 words inclusive of notes, bibliography and appendices. The dissertation shall focus collectively on the three main areas of Performing Arts, or at least two, to be chosen from Dance, Music, and Theatre. Students shall be required to present a research proposal according to deadlines set by the School. Following school approval based on the recommendations of the heads of departments, a supervisor will be designated for each project; students will be expected to work in close consultation with their supervisors on their research topic. Students must register for this study-unit during the final year of studies. Study-Unit Aims: The aims of this study-unit are to: - Enable students to focus on an approved topic combining three, or a minimum of two, areas from the three main areas of study in the performing arts: dance, music, and theatre; - Foster independent learning and a self-critical attitude; - Develop the skills and critical abilities to conduct research and enhance knowledge; and - Cultivate professional standards related to the disciplines of dance, music, and theatre. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate the ability to study in detail an approved research topic combining different performing arts; - Evaluate original sources in a methodical manner; - Use concepts as interpretative tools and be critical when analysing data and findings; and - Express ideas concerning the performing arts effectively and in an acade. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Conceive, plan, and write a piece of extensive writing at undergraduate level according to academic criteria; - Discuss critically a research topic that successfully combines the interaction of two or three performing arts, and to do so via an interdisciplinary approach; and - Identify and evaluate performing issues within technical, historical, and conceptual frameworks. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: The aim of the dissertation is to give students the opportunity to conduct individualised research under the supervision of a specialist or specialists in the topic. The readings will therefore be determined by the subject or theme under investigation and a different reading list will be provided for each student.
