DESCRIPTION | This is an introduction to the principles of biochemistry underlying the field of dentistry. Emphasis will be placed on the foundations of biochemistry Including the molecules that are found in the cell, including carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and nucleic acids. Macromolecules including bone,enamel and dentine will also be covered. Where feasible, integration with the dentistry field will be carried out. Study-unit Aims: To enable students following the BSc In Dental hygiene to apply the foundations of Biochemistry to their field of specialisation. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: I. Recognise the features of molecules that are relevant to the field of Dentistry; II. Recognise the molecules that are Involved In synthetic chemical pathways. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: I. Identify the core molecules involved in dental and oral health and disease.
