DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will give an overview of the major concepts, the major empirical themes and the contribution of psychology to our understanding of sport performance in human behaviour. Practical sessions will also take place. The study-unit will draw upon the students’ experiences of sport and exercise to help provide a specific frame of reference for the study of human behaviour in sport and exercise settings. It will also present the science that underpins movement learning and execution. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit intends to provide students with foundation knowledge and skills in selected areas of sports and exercise psychology. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - define and discuss major concepts related to sport and exercise psychology including motivation, personality, self-awareness, self-confidence, team challenges, transitional challenges and measurement tools in psychology; - demonstrate knowledge about human behaviour in sport and physical activity; - apply theoretical perspectives from psychology in real world contexts; - enhance his/her coaching and teaching skills through the use of psychological skills; - develop the knowledge underlying motor learning and control; - develop the knowledge necessary for team management – communication, motivation, leadership, team building. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - identify the psychological challenges faced by individuals participating in sport and exercise; - lead a team; - use a number of psychological tools which enhance players’ performance.
