TITLE Outdoor Activities, Team Building and Innovative Games

DESCRIPTION The study-unit will run through a number of lectures together with a residential camp, where the students will participate in specific outdoor activities including orienteering and trekking. Students will also learn about the use of team building activities to develop leadership, communication and social skills in their participants, together with other ways of motivating them to be physically active and to develop fundamental skills through the use of innovative games such as ultimate, intercrosse and tchoukball.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims at equipping the participants with the skills needed to plan and deliver a programme of team building activities, traditional and innovative games, and outdoor adventure activities.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- fully comprehend the values of outdoor adventure activities;
- identify risks related to outdoor activities;
- establish the objectives of team building activities;
- describe the rules of various innovative games;
- identify appropriate pedagogies to teach innovative games;
- identify officiating methods related to them;
- list the main traditional games played in Malta up to a few decades ago.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- design and conduct outdoor activities;
- organise and deliver team building activities;
- build team strength and unity through games;
- teach various innovative games;
- teach fundamental skills through innovative games;
- teach traditional Maltese games;
- reflect upon personal experiences before, during and after the activity.
