| DESCRIPTION | The study-unit will consist of four lectures covering the theoretical content related to trekking: as sport for all, the equipment required, safety issues, an over view of the Maltese milieu, trekking legislation and environment protection. The practical component will cover three trekking ventures: 3-hour coastal trek, 4-hour inland trek, 6-hour inland and coastal. The short treks will be held on Saturdays, and the long trek on a Sunday. Tentative Months: March/April. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to make students aware of the importance of trekking as a sport in the lives of every individual and to show them that Malta, although small in size has got some very interesting treks both by the sea and inland. It also gives the students the incentives to discover their own treks and work as a group to discover the Islands of Malta and Gozo. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate knowledge about the rules of trekking; - Demonstrate knowledge about how to choose trekking equipment; - Find existing trekking routes in Malta. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Plot a trek in Malta or in Gozo; - Identify all the important information on that trek especially historical monuments; - Use the different equipment needed in different weather conditions and apply them to the best possible way. | ADDITIONAL NOTES | Attendance for all treks is compulsory. Students are expected to be fit enough to be able to handle these treks on rough terrain. Each trek lasts 3-4 hours. |
