DESCRIPTION The study-unit covers the principles of exercise and fitness and the relationship and effects of training. Different training methods will be presented. This study-unit will serve as an introduction for trainers to provide guidance for individuals, communities, and teams so that they can gain benefits of regular physical activity.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to provide students with a basic knowledge on the effects of training, and outlines the principles of training including specificity, overload, and reversibility. It gives an introduction to exercise planning and explains the components of fitness.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of all the principles of training;
- Distinguish between the various components of fitness;
- Describe methods of training related to particular case studies;
- List a variety of exercises targeting different muscle groups.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate safe and effective exercise to cater for the various needs;
- Plan exercise programmes;
- Use different principles of training to enhance the performance and fitness of participants;
- Compare different methods of training to achieve optimal improvement in athletes;
- Demonstrate exercises using own body weight, resistance machines, cardio equipment and free weights.
