DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will explore the realm of sports journalism in particular the different approaches to the written, broadcast and new media styles. The unit will investigate different treatments to different situations and will assist students into grasping the main pillars that formulate the principles of sports journalism including news updates, news conferences, thematic sports programmes, interviews, features and in-depth approaches. It also tackles the use of technology in sport and physical activity. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit will introduce the student to the basic concepts of journalism and their application to a specific field - sport journalism. The main differences between broadcast and print-based journalism will be explored as well as the main characteristics of the new and emerging media including web portals. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate knowledge of the basic rules that govern communication as reflected in journalism; - Distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate copy; - Distinguish between different forms of sport journalism genres. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate appropriate writing skills necessary for effective sport journalism; - Prepare different treatments for different media; - Execute gatekeeping decisions and editing sports related content; - Use technology as a means to improve performance in sport and physical activity.
