DESCRIPTION | This study-unit addresses specifically the curricular subject of Physical Education (PE) which is offered within Maltese Schooling. Areas of concern and challenges within the subject, such as its development, relevance and status will be dealt with, together with what pedagogies should be employed in order to make teaching PE effective. The study-unit will focus on teachers and teachers' education together with the learners and learning in PE. Other aspects which will be dealt with are the historical development of PE and the sociological and philosophical interpretations of the subject. Models-based practice, traditional activity-based curriculum and other curricula of PE together with curriculum construction and change will be explored. The local PE Curriculum, embracing the new learning outcomes (2015) will also be dealt with. Planning a quality PE Programme to ensure that such programmes are underpinned by comprehensive and coherent plans is vital for the development of the subject. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to give an overview and explore major contemporary issues in Physical Education (PE) and various matters that physical educators face in their daily professional lives.
