DESCRIPTION This study-unit builds on the experience gained during Sport Placement 1 in the first year. Participants on the placement will gain valuable experience in a sport setting and enhance their knowledge and expertise of working in this area. Participants will also produce written documentation on the planning, delivery and evaluation of their work. The placement includes 25 logged hours. At the end of this unit, students will present a file reflecting the preparation, and reflection of the work they have they have carried out together with a log of the work exhibited during the placement.

Study-unit Aims:

The career opportunities in the field of sport are increasing all the time, with a diverse range of occupations within different sectors of sport. These range from management positions to exercise and fitness, coaching, and sports development. This unit aims to give the student the opportunity to prepare for a career in sport, and to experience hands-on work in a sport related area. The placement is intended as part of the practical component of the whole course where students can apply theory into practice. Students will be guided to set specific personal and organisational objectives, to review them using a reflective log during the placement, and to evaluate them at the end of the placement.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Become fully aware of the opportunities available for work in sport;
- Put theory into practice in a sport setting;
- Justify identified targets of their placement and how these can be achieved;
- Be able to learn the coaching process, coaching practice, science applied to coaching and the political and sociological context of sport in Malta;
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the procedures and practices of work in a sports setting.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Prepare for a work-based learning experience;
- Develop initiative to plan, organise and evaluate sport related tasks;
- Develop coaching and management skills in sport activities;
- Communicate with other sports personnel and to learn from them;
- Present evidence of activities and achievements during the placement;
- Review a work-based experience in sport;
- Think creatively;
- Reflect on their performance, and to identify their strengths and areas for improvement, and how these can be developed.
