DESCRIPTION The focus of this study-unit is to give the students the opportunity to gain the skills and understanding of a variety of individual sports. Each sport that will be tackled will be analysed pedagogically thus giving it a different focus than the mentioned coaching skills modules. The role of the official in each sport is also covered. The study-unit will be carried out both on a practical and theoretical basis so that the students will experience the pedagogy of individual games.

Study-Unit Aims:

- The study-unit aims at providing students with knowledge and hands on experience of the pedagogical issues in an individual sport. A number of sports are used as a medium through which sport pedagogy is presented. Officiating in each sport will also be included.
- Students will experience analysis of coaching pedagogies together with awareness of the qualities which make individual sport different from team sport.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Differentiate between the components of individual and team sport;
- Comprehend the appropriate technique used for each sport component;
- Differentiate between effective, efficient and good pedagogy and inappropriate styles;
- Observe and analyse good practice and isolate pedagogical issues within coaching sessions;
- Appreciate the diverse pedagogies implemented across a number of individual sports through field observations;
- Learn the rules governing each sport.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Organise and manage a coaching session using the right and appropriate pedagogy;
- Identify good and poor pedagogy;
- Identify appropriate pedagogies for different age brackets;
- Recognise correct techniques required at different levels of sport play;
- Officiate individual sports.
