DESCRIPTION | This study-unit outlines the main concepts related to exercise planning and implementation. Emphasis being placed on principles of periodisation and programme planning. Special population needs and specific exercise prescriptions are also highlighted, with reference to the role of strength and conditioning in an exercise plan. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit aims to build on the knowledge acquired in unit PHE1120 on exercise and fitness. It gives relevant knowledge about the different phases in a training plan, and exercise prescriptions for specific populations such as children, elderly and pregnant women, and for the development of all different fitness components. It also covers the basic principles of weight lifting, cardiovascular exercises and a variety of other exercises used in different training environments. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe the different phases of training. - Demonstrate knowledge about the specific needs of different populations. - Demonstrate knowledge about periodisation. - Show an understanding of the different exercise needs related to each fitness component. - Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of weight lifting exercises and spotting. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Design a full macro cycle of fitness training related to the specific needs and demands in various case studies. Give sound and solid demonstration of the exercise units in question. - Analyze and design effective micro cycles and single sessions too, relative to the various case studies. - Work out effective plans designed at weight loss, sport specific and rehabilitation purposes. - Carry out and demonstrate basic workout skills and exercises.
