DESCRIPTION | Governance involves concepts of direction, control and regulation. In essence, organisation governance is the responsibility for the functioning and overall direction of the organisation and is a necessary and institutionalised component of all sporting codes from national bodies, government agencies, sport service organisations and professional teams. Sport development will also be discussed as this is an important emerging field of academic study with a distinct of contribution to make a wider social, cultural, economic and education policies and practice. Study-unit Aims: To bring together issues on "sport governance" which will be presented through a range of issues and perspectives on sport governance practice and theory. Also, it aims at discussing the role and need of sport policy and the purpose behind sport development programmes. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - demonstrate knowledge and understanding of corporate governance, systemic governance, global governance. - be aware of the trends in sport. - have an in depth knowledge of sport development. - comprehend the content of the Maltese Sports Act and the EU White Paper on Sport. - comprehend the complex relationship between modern sport, sport policy and development of other aspects of wider society. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - perceive governance as networks, thus creating partnerships, cooperation, and collaboration. - apply ethical standards of good governance underpinned through relationships, methods and instruments of relationships.
