DESCRIPTION The study-unit's primary goal is to provide students with the knowledge of the principles of gymnastics training and gymnastics events officiating. Through the understanding of the biomechanics principles, students will be able to analyse and demonstrate basic gymnastics core skills. This study-unit also provides students with the safety measures they should follow in gymnastics and how to design, review and judge various gymnastics apparatus routines.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to teach the principles, processes and general concepts in gymnastics. In addition, it also aims to provide students with an opportunity to acquire and apply basic gymnastics core skills and learn how to demonstrate and analyse the mechanics of the selected skills.

This study-unit also seeks to teach students how to design and compose gymnastics routines using various apparatus and how to evaluate gymnastics performance using an international judging framework. An important aim is to teach students how to assess Maltese athletes according to the local standards. Safety in handling of gymnastics equipment and spotting techniques in gymnastics coaching will also be covered.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Define fitness attributes: principles of training base on strength, flexibility, power and endurance;
- Reproduce the international standards of judging (FIG) and modify a judging system for the local athletes;
- List gymnastics training aids;
- Demonstrate knowledge of the progressions of coaching gymnastics' basic core skills.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Design gymnastics training program based on physical fitness attributes, and create daily lesson plans and annual training programmes;
- Analyse gymnastics routines, evaluate and judge the performance of local level athletes;
- Use training aids to conduct step-by step progressions;
- Organize training and assist coaching of lower level athletes in gymnastics.
