DESCRIPTION | The study-unit builds upon an overview of sociology and the way this is related to sport following the introduction to Sport sociology. Different approaches, namely; the figurational and ethological perspectives are used as a framework within which sport development is analysed. The study-unit delves into issues pertaining to Youth and sport, sport globalisation as well as look at developing sport trends and ways how social skills may be incorporated within sports experiences. Study-Unit Aims: The study-unit aims at: - Differentiating between the various approaches in sport sociology; - Distinguishing between the approaches as well as explore applicability of these approaches and the way these relate to the sport world; - Distinguishing between play and organised sport; - Discussing ways how the medium of sport could be used to capture social skills. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Define the different approaches in sport sociology; - Discuss the challenges, milestones and development of youth sport and how this impacts lives; - Relate to social skills and sport in ways which would merge both together. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Analyse different approaches to sport sociology; - Apply sport participation and competition to the studied approaches; - Integrate social skills within sports experiences; - Critically analyse justifications of actions and changes happening to sport and discuss reasons for developing sports trends.
