DESCRIPTION | The study-unit focuses on the philosophical and ethical aspects of sport. It further delves into sport values. The themes covered across sport values in this study-unit are: The value of sport & PE, Sport Values &Young people, Ethical attitudes, Diversity in values across the globe, Teaching Values through Sport & Balancing conflicting values. Themes selected with an ethical framework are: Rules, Spoiling and Cheating, The ethics of enhancement, Dis/ability, gender and race, Ethical development in Sport and Exploitation of Sport. Study-Unit Aims: The educational purpose of this study-unit is to provide students with opportunities to explore contexts within sports which go beyond the practical aspects of sport. The study-unit aims at engaging students in reflection and discussion on a selection of themes across philosophy sport ethics and values. This targets continuous formation and development of the philosophical underpinnings of students. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Define the values of sport and PE; - Identify the necessary values needed to be embedded within youth sport; - Identify positive ethical attitudes in sport; - Differentiate between global diversity in values; - Identify ways how to teach values in sport; - Engage in discussion on themes related to sportsmanship and fair play; - Identify inclusive sports practices; - Identify the boundaries of ethical development and exploitation of sport. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Integrate values and ethical aspects across reflection and pedagogy; - Use the medium of sport to bring across values; - Evaluate value and ethically sound sport practices; - Identify the challenges between conflicting values; - Identify the challenges in relation to performance enhancement practices brought forward by the advancement of sport; - Evaluate factors relating to sport exploitation.
