DESCRIPTION | This study-unit focuses on a number of socio-psychologial aspects. The main topics under discussion are: Personality and sport, Group/team dynamics and cohesion, Communication, Aggression, Sport for special populations, Influence of Social support on athletes, Parental involvement, Passion for sport in Athletes and Sport morality. This study-unit brings together a number of Socio-Psychologial aspects. The study-unit starts off by looking into the position of the ‘I’ and the ‘we’ in individual and team sport. It explores the power of team unity, social support and cohesion in relation to the individual athlete as well as look into themes which support or hinder sport competition, participation and performance. The study-unit further explores external factors which influence the dynamic nature of sport competition and how these impinge on the formation of the athlete as a person. Study-Unit Aims: The educational purpose of the study-unit is to provide students with a deeper understanding of aspects across the paradigms of psychology and Sociology. It aims at informing students about the complex nature of sport and its multi relational potential as well as develop an appreciation for the various powerful ways sport impinges on human life. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Differentiate between personality theories; - Assess and evaluate team cohesion and group dynamics; - Differentiate between profitable communication processes and others which are not effective; - Relate to the qualities of aggression and aggressive behaviours and traits in athletes; - Relate to the needs of sport and active participation for all communities and populations; - Evaluate social supporting methods and programmes for athletes; - Differentiate between effective and negative parental involvement; - Define issues pertaining to Sport and Morality. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify traits which attract or repel people from sport and active participation; - Use and integrate methods which help build better team work and team cohesion; - Use better and more effective communication skills; - Reflect on the position of aggression and aggressive behaviour and its place within sport; - Reflect on the issue of access to sport and inclusion for all populations; - Reflect on social support on athletes and how this effects them; - Address positive and negative parental involvement; - Reflect on issues pertaining to sport and morality and the significance of all this in athlete formation.
