DESCRIPTION | This study-unit delves into leadership concepts in relation to sport and physical education. The role of the leader and the responsibility which comes with becoming a leader will be thoroughly examined. Topics such as personal management, relationship management and conflict management will be covered. Students will have the opportunity to apply leadership concepts within the microcosm of the classroom and sports field. This study-unit also explores how the ‘role’ is critical in the identity formation of those who are given leadership responsibilities. Discussions of how leaders are expected to work on their personality to be able to guide and direct those who they are responsible for will ensue. Leaders are expected to inspire a number of collective values and beliefs. The latter is driven by responsibilities ancillary to the role i.e. social or organisational development and improvement. Consequently, change and the understanding of how it is brought about becomes key. Students will study how leaders have the responsibility of visioning alternative realities while valuing collectively construed vision/s aligned to the organisation or institutional mission. Collaborative cultures and their success in organisational settings will be delved into. Moreover, a number of leadership styles that are identified in research will be explored. An understanding of how various situations may demand different leadership approaches and what makes these styles useful towards success will be sought. Study-Unit Aims: The aims of this study-unit are to: - Gain an advanced understanding of leadership within the context of physical education and sport, and interventions aimed at making a positive impact upon individuals and local community more broadly; - Analyse successful measures in developing new, creative and innovative ideas to encourage individuals to participate in physical activity and sport; - Learn how to co-ordinate a series of programmes and interventions, as well as being able to manage people and organisations to achieve sport and physical activity objectives in Malta.
