DESCRIPTION This study-unit gives an overview of the evolution of physical education and sport within a historical perspective; how sport changed from ancient civilizations including the Hellenic, Roman and Medieval eras, followed by the analysis of how the industrial revolution impacted the development of sport as we know it today. An analysis of amateur and professional status, and what historical factors led to the prevalence of professional sport in modern society will ensue. This study-unit will also focus on how the curricular subject of PE evolved as from the emergence of education in the 19th century. Physical Education developed in the 19th century due to the increase in importance of education in society and because some schools added sport activities into their daily schedules.

Also, Sports in the 19th century were incorporated into school, military, and work environments. Influence of the works of various scholars and educators such as Johann H.Pestalozzi, Freidrich W.A. Froebel; and F. Nachtegall in the 18th Century and others such as T. D. Wood (1910) linking health to education; J.F. Williams’ ‘The Principles of PE’ (1907); C. Mc Cloy’s ‘Philosophical Bases for Physical Education’ (1940); and JB Nash’s ‘Physical Education: Interpretation and Objectives’ (1948) are all key to the evolution of the subject. In view of the changes happening in society at large and in education systems, the contemporary developments of PE are explored.
