DESCRIPTION | The study-unit will give an overview of how curriculum theory and development, curriculum policy and reform processes effect the curricular subject of physical education both within the local and foreign scenarios. Different PE Curriculum models and transforming pedagogies in PE will be explored together with the Objectives Approach which will be highlighted within Curriculum Planning and Curriculum-Making. Special focus will be given on the development of new learning outcomes in the Maltese Education System. The functional curriculum within PE (explicit, covert, null and hidden curriculum) and how teaching and learning within PE is open to the four levels of this curriculum is debated. Also, cross curricular approaches and creative approaches in PE are seen as an innovative approach to PE curriculum design. Understanding curriculum change and how it impacts the subject is also an important part of curriculum design. The issues and challenges that effect the future of the subject are delved into with the proposition of redesigning the subject in various countries. The Local Context, meaning the different levels of the PE Curriculum (General PE and Assessed PE at Secondary level; Kinder/Primary and Examined PE:SEC PE and Intermediate PE) is explored. Study-Unit Aims: The study-unit aims at giving learners an overview of how curriculum theories were developed and how these theories impacted on the curricular subject of PE. Reform and curriculum change, together with their impact on the work of the practitioner will also be explored. Objectives are central components in the curriculum making process and the association between the use of objectives and the learning outcomes within the local context is highlighted; as is the influence of curriculum design on pupil assessment. The different learning domains within PE are also featured. Model-based practices within PE are an addition to PE pedagogies. Various pedagogies such as TPSR; Sport Education and PE-for-Health Pedagogies amongst others are delved into. The unit aims to look into Examined PE and its impact on the subject. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Define and identify curriculum development within PE; - Recognizecurriculum theories and policies and their impact on the physical educationt; - Identify contemporary changes happening within the subject; - Interpret different approaches applied within the curricular subject; - Distinguish and criticize assessed PE and the challenges behind the the process; - Outline and examine the statistics related to assessed PE performance of local students; - Critically evaluate weaknesses and strengths in the examination process. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Design and develop a PE program based on different curricular and pedagogical models; - Plan a PE program reflecting different levels of the education system; - Critically examine the impact of assessed PE on the subject; - Design an assessment program for learning in PE.
