DESCRIPTION The student together with a designated lecturer will agree on a subject that has philosophical resonance with the purpose of undertaking a more complex analysis of it. This will entail reading thoroughly on the subject with the view to formulating an argument.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is (a) to guide students through the task of writing a philosophical piece of research; (b) is to sharpen their writing and argumentative skills; and (c) to encourage their philosophical imagination.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. demonstrate knowledge of the questions which form the subject matter of the study;
2. analyze or critique the theme through both primary and secondary sources.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. identify and formulate a hypothesis concerning a philosophical question;
2. review the primary and secondary literature in order to find a way of providing an answer to this question.
