DESCRIPTION This study-unit covers a selection of contemporary continental philosophers from Merleau-Ponty to Levinas, among others who have engaged with issues of community, inter subjectivity, ethics and dialogue; the aim is to deepen the understanding of these philosophers and their texts. The philosophers treated in this study-unit have been at the forefront of continental philosophy and their contributions have challenged us to think more closely about our times.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to:
- bring into focus the contribution of contemporary continental philosophers in the history of philosophy and their engagement with the philosophical tradition;
- discuss the ideas and works of a selection of continental philosophers;
- encourage students to research and engage with continental philosophers;
- encourage students to pursue further philosophical studies in continental philosophy.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- engage critically with the works and ideas of contemporary continental philosophers;
- identify and review relevant secondary literature concerning specific authors;
- describe recent and ongoing scholarship on continental philosophy;
- consolidate and enhance their knowledge of the history of philosophy and contemporary philosophical debates.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- read analytically and critically texts by at least two philosophers covered in the unit;
- identify and reflect upon key concepts discussed by continental philosophers;
- engage in meaningful discussions on specific texts and ideas covered in the unit.
