DEPARTMENT Philosophy

 
DESCRIPTION By the end of the last semester of the B.A. (Hons) course, every Philosophy Honours student is expected to have written, and submitted for examination, a dissertation of 12-15000 words, exclusive of notes, bibliography, and appendices.

Students should register for this study-unit during the final year of studies, but the topic must be chosen early in the second year of the Course, after consultation with the Head of Department, who will then assign a member of the academic staff to act as supervisor.

All dissertations should follow the Departmental style-sheet, available on the Departmental website.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to familiarise students with in-depth research.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- define key concepts;
- conduct research on a topic using original sources;
- develop a critical attitude towards the texts.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- employ the appropriate conventions for a written piece of academic writing;
- argue coherently and consistently in favour or against a point of view in a written text.

 
ADDITIONAL NOTES **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.
