DESCRIPTION This is an exercise in conducting a research study in public health, writing it up and defending it. A hypothesis or study question is posed. The literature is reviewed and the methods of study are selected. The study is then conducted and analysed. It is written up, including sections on background, methods, results, discussion and conclusions. The dissertation is then defended in front of a board of examiners.

Study-unit Aims:

To make the student familiar with the everyday business of research in public health. This includes the practical aspects of actually preparing and conducting the research and writing it up in order to defend it.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Conduct a research study in public health;
- Be able how to defend a study in the face of constructive criticism.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Know how to conduct a good literature review and select the appropriate tools of measurement and of study design;
- Know how to write up a study report;
- Become familiar with simple descriptive and summarative result presentation and of further analyses;
- Select the appropriate results and conclusions which emanate from the study.

ADDITIONAL NOTES **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.
