DESCRIPTION The study-unit is targeted for students who have an interest in the business and management side of the pharmaceutical industry and healthcare. Aspects of management, marketing and pharmacy administration in relation to different pharmaceutical activities will be covered. The study-unit will provide a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of business management with an understanding of skills needed in management, administration and marketing in relation to pharmaceutical contexts.

On completion of this unit, students can follow different career paths in health information and healthcare management, pharmacy distribution systems and implementation, medicines, food and medical devices regulatory areas and pharmaceutical sales.

Study-unit Aims:

The study unit aims to:
- Help the student appreciate and understand the importance of efficient management strategies within various healthcare settings.
- Help the student perform efficient pharmaceutical marketing operations keeping in mind current regulations, ethical issues and keeping the patient as the focus of all decision making.
- Help the student develop and perform efficient administrative procedures in relation to pharmaceutical processes, management and marketing.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Combine pharmaceutical principles with marketing and general management strategies.
- Plan effective strategies related to drug development and marketing keeping in mind important pharmaceutical regulations.
- Appreciate the importance of having effective administrative systems in place in relation to different pharmaceutical processes within hospital pharmacy, pharmacy administration institutions and pharmaceutical marketing scenarios.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Comprehend complex processes of the pharmaceutical environment and perform efficient management in pharmaceutical scenarios.
- Understand and implement efficient marketing strategies keeping in mind all related pharmaceutical regulations whilst aiming for pharmacoeconomic success.
- Plan, devise and record administrative tasks related to different pharmaceutical settings.
- Apply and relate principles of Good Manufacturing Practice, Good Distribution Practice and Pharmacy Practice to pharmaceutical management, marketing and administration.
