| DESCRIPTION | The aim of this study-unit is to allow the student to carry out basic manipulative therapy techniques. The student will be introduced to the elements of palpation of various joints in the upper and lower limb (also included in PHT 1067) and will lead to the performance of specific manipulative techniques to increase range of motion and decrease pain. This is a year-long study-unit with the focus on the upper limb in the first semester and lower limb in the second. By the end of this study-unit the student will be able to deal with different manipulative techniques as part of the rehabilitation programme. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to allow the student to carry out basic manipulative therapy techniques to the peripheral joints. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Locate anatomical landmarks used in manipulative techniques; - State the indications and contraindications for the application of manipulative techniques; - Apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology to the application of manipulative procedures; - Discuss and demonstrate the application of passive movement techniques; - State the contraindications to the application of oscillatory manipulative techniques; - Describe the grades of oscillatory manipulative techniques and indicate the use of each grade; - Recognise the conditions contraindicated to soft-tissue manipulation and apply any appropriate precautions. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Carry out routine examinations of peripheral joints; - Discuss examination findings and their implications for treatment; - Perform peripheral manipulative techniques in grades I - IV; - Maintain records of assessment and treatment for various peripheral joints.
