DESCRIPTION Conducting research is one way of studying a specific problem in depth. Choosing an area of interest generally stems from some professional concerns one may have which one would like to investigate systematically and in a scientific way. Having performed the necessary steps for the research project one will find that one’s approach to both patients and the profession will change. Reflection on the process of scientific application will facilitate clarity of thought and analysis in tackling patient problems and peer review.

Study-unit Aims:

The dissertation should help develop research skills, namely:

• Choosing an area of study which is of interest to self and to profession;
• Identifying specific research questions for investigation;
• Choosing the right instruments which to assist in the collection of necessary information;
• Contacting people who will contribute/participate in the study, ensuring an awareness of ethical considerations;
• Looking up, reading, reporting and acknowledging relevant literature;
• Reporting findings in a scientific way;
• Presenting an interpretation of the findings via dissertation report, poster and oral examination.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Critically evaluate and reflect upon the learning experience;
- Document and evaluate competencies (knowledge, skills, abilities);
- Identify ongoing learning needs and competency development;
- Acknowledge the importance of continuous professional development and life-long learning.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Improve his/her writing skills;
- Improve his/her research skills;
- Improve his/her IT skills;
- Improve his/her communication skills;
- Improve his/her analyzing skills;
- Reflect and evaluate the research process; and
- Verbalise the research process and findings to peers.

ADDITIONAL NOTES **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.
