DESCRIPTION | This study-unit comprises a clinical block of normally two clinical areas with a total of 260 hours of supervised clinical practice, which must be achieved by the end of the study-unit. Students are supervised by qualified physiotherapists in the clinical area allotted to the physiotherapists. Students and clinical supervisors will use written guidelines provided by the Department to guide the learning process. The student will be supported throughout the placement by the clinical supervisor and the academic mentor, and assessed throughout the placement and at the end of the block. The student will be allotted a caseload of 3-5 patients by the assigned clinical supervisor. The student is responsible for keeping accurate attendance sheets to document the required number of hours as well as submitting them to the Clinical Coordinator’s office by the stipulated deadline. By the end of this clinical block, the student will be expected to practise independently and consistently in a safe and competent manner using the physiotherapy competencies of assessing, planning the short-term as well as long-term management of the patient, carrying out physiotherapy interventions safely and effectively, and evaluating the care delivered to said patient. Patient management will include a holistic approach to the physical, psychological, social needs of their patients. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is for the physiotherapy student to practise as a advanced performer as part of their development into early career physiotherapists under the supervision of a clinical supervisor and an academic mentor. It gives the student the opportunity to practise the evidence-based skills they would have learned in the labs and previous clinical blocks, and communicate effectively with the patient and the members of the interdisciplinary team. The student will practise the specific performance indicators and subsequently demonstrate safe and effective practice at the required level of competence, as specified in the Clinical Competences Portfolio. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Critically reflect on the physiotherapy treatment delivered, to improve own learning needs; - Demonstrate leadership in various aspects of physiotherapy management; - Discuss the conditions that a patient/client presents with in the student clinical area; - Describe the physical limitations that arise from these conditions; - Explain the psychosocial implications of the functional limitations or disability; - Provide, via narration, an accurate account of the patient's clinical history; - Discuss the role of the multidisciplinary team in the student's clinical placement; - Explain the role of the physiotherapist in the student's clinical placement area; - Independently prioritise physiotherapy treatment appropriately; - Independently recognise improvement in patient condition and adapt treatment accordingly; - Independently recognise deterioration in patient condition and adapt treatment accordingly; - Independently make decisions on physiotherapy management of patients based on the stage of rehabilitation, the need for re-assessment and re-evaluation of treatment plan; - Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for patient treatment; - Express own professional and personal views about ethical and legal challenges associated with the delivery of physiotherapy in acute, long-term or community settings; and - Independently give advice and empower patients and relatives to ameliorate physical limitations and enhance self-care. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Competently apply a range of basic clinical skills throughout the placement, with intermittent supervision from a qualified member of staff, that may be implemented to test for the conditions that caused impairment or disability; - Competently apply a range of basic clinical skills throughout the placement, with intermittent supervision from a qualified member of staff, that may be implemented to treat conditions that caused impairment or disability; - Analyse findings from a patient medical file within an appropriate time-frame; - Write an effective Subjective and Objective Assessment of a patient within an appropriate time-frame; - Write an Analysis of the patient's condition within an appropriate time-frame; - Construct a plan of treatment/management within an appropriate time-frame; - Correctly apply basic theoretical knowledge to practice, according to the specific clinical setting; - Integrate with health-care professionals, patients and relatives as student physiotherapist; - Act lawfully and demonstrating responsibility and accountability in patient care; and - Demonstrate efficient time management in completing an effective assessment and treatment of a yet unseen patient.
