DESCRIPTION | The study-unit will be analyzing the Catholic church understanding of the Human person and of the role of education within the conception of humanity as established by Vatican Council II. This will lead to a development of an ethical critical hermeneutic of cultural practices both within and outside the Church. This study has four parts: 1. a historical reading of Vatican Council II's understanding of the human person within a Post World War II social setting; 2. engaging Vatican Council II's understanding of the human person with Post-Colonial, Post-Holocaust and Feminist literature; 3. an analysis of the ethical implication of Vatican Council II's conception of the human person on contemporary cultural constructs of sexism, racism and classism; 4. an exploration of Vatican Council II's understanding of the Human person through contemporary artistic and Cultural expressions. Study-unit Aims: The aims of this study-unit are segmented in three: 1. Exploring Vatican Council II's conception of Human person and its ethical implications; 2. Providing an ethical deconstruction of sexism, racism and classism through Vatican Council II's understanding of Human Person; 3. Exploring, engaging and inclusive possibilities with contemporary cultural constructs through Vatican II understanding of Human Person. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: A. give a detailed and holistic description of the nature of the human person as this is conceptualized by Vatican Council II; B. read and understand the documents of the Church on the human being in the light of the anthropology elaborated by Vatican Council II; C. express and articulate through words their faith as human beings in relation to contemporary cultural constructs. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: A. enter in to an ethical critical relationship with contemporary culture; B. engage dialogically with contemporary cultural constructs in the light of the contemporary Catholic Anthropology; C. express their faith in a more organic way, thus engaging more critically in their faith and its expressions.
