| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will focus on general aspects of lower limb orthoses and prosthetics. An overview on the biomechanics of normal gait will be given together with pathological gait and other general causes of impairment that may require orthotic intervention. The use of ankle-foot orthoses, knee orthoses, knee-ankle-foot orthoses and hip orthoses will be discussed together with the pathologies which require these type of orthoses. Lower limb prostheses will also be introduced together with the general causes and levels of amputation. The biomechanics and components of prostheses for above knee amputations, below knee amputations and partial foot amputations will also be discussed. Furthermore, each student will be attached to the Orthotics and Prosthetics Unit to support and consolidate the taught lectures. Samples of various orthoses and prostheses will be shown and students will have the opportunity to see the same devices being used with real patients. Study-unit Aims This study-unit aims to introduce students to the use of orthotics and prosthetics. The study unit also aims to bridge various differing concepts between orthoses produced in podiatric practice and those produced by orthotists/prosthesists. It will also cover those devices traditionally prescribed and manufactured by orthotists. This unit will help students gain knowledge on the application and functions of these foot devices and appreciate and evaluate various foot pathologies which require the use of these devices. Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: (a) Recognize the basis of prosthesis and orthoses and their use; (b) Appreciate the various types of lower limb orthoses and lower limb prosthesis that are available for various foot pathologies and foot amputations; (c) Recognize the significance of the podiatrist and orthotist/prosthesist working together as a team for holistic patient care; (d) Relate the difference between the biomechanics of normal gait and pathological gait. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: (a) Apply the use of orthoses and prosthesis for various foot pathologies and amputations; (b) Apply clinical skill in choosing /prescribing the relevant orthotic/prosthetic device for the underlying foot pathology; (c) Demonstrate sufficient expertise in working together with the orthotist/prosthetist as a team for holistic patient care.
