DESCRIPTION This unit offers a comprehensive exploration of podiatric surgery, encompassing fundamental principles such as pre-operative assessment and indications for surgical procedures in the foot and ankle. It delves into the use of local anesthesia and regulations related to sterile techniques within surgical practice, whether in a clinical or theatre setting. This course will cover aspects of general surgery and trauma affecting the foot and ankle, emphasizing management principles and long-term sequelae. Students will gain insights into the broad spectrum of podiatric surgical procedures and acquire a solid understanding of the critical aspects involved in both assessment and intervention.

Study-unit Aims:

- To provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the general principles of podiatric surgery;
- To equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for conducting thorough pre-operative assessments in the context of podiatric surgery;
- To familiarize students with the indications for various surgical procedures related to the foot and ankle;
- Examine regional anesthesia techniques and regulations pertaining to sterile techniques, emphasizing their application in both clinical and theater settings.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the fundamental principles of podiatric surgery, including preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care;
- Analyse the anatomy and pathophysiology relevant to podiatric surgery, focusing on the foot;
- Describe various surgical techniques and procedures used in podiatric surgery, including indications, contraindications, and potential complications;
- Demonstrate knowledge related to comprehensive assessments and management of patients, including history taking and physical examination;
- Demonstrate knowledge of infection control practices;
- Describe the appropriate pharmacological agents used in surgery, including anesthesia.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Apply their theoretical knowledge as basis for clinical decision making in different clinical scenarios relating to foot and ankle surgery;
- Recognise the need and recommend required nail surgery according to the clinical need in different case scenarios;
- Perform appropriate pre-operative assessment required for clinical decision making regarding choice of surgery;
- Recognise the need for post-operative management according to clinical need;
- Demonstrate the knowledge of management of intra-operative risks in nail surgery.
