DESCRIPTION | Throughout this study-unit, students will receive hands-on instruction in the performance of cutaneous surgery. They will participate in podiatric surgical clinics where principles of peri-operative management are put into practice. Students will also have the opportunity to assess patients post-operatively and be involved in their management. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate pre-operative assessment and peri-operative management skills in relation to podiatric surgery; - Recognize the role of foot and ankle surgery in the management of lower limb pathology through exposure to patients undergoing podiatric foot and ankle surgery; - Identify indications and contra-indications for common foot and ankle surgical procedures; - Recognize postoperative complications and their management; and - Identify and critically discuss recent research studies in podiatric surgery. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Participate as a competent practitioner in non-incisional surgical nail procedures; - Develop the student's clinical skills in curettage; - Be able to competently perform non-incisional nail surgical procedures; - Implement ongoing review procedures regarding the use of specialised equipment and associated techniques; - Be able to address postoperative complications and their management; and - Identify and critically discuss recent research studies in podiatric surgery.
