| DESCRIPTION | This is a research based dissertation. During the course of the research project, an advanced level of training in the specialised areas related to the profession orthotics and/or prosthetics, with particular focus on research design and methodology, will be provided to students to enhance their research skills in a specific research area directly related to orthotics and/or prosthetics. Study-Unit Aims: The dissertation aims at carrying out a research project, closely related to prosthetics and/or orthotics, which will allow students to develop scientific research skills by learning how to collect, analyse and evaluate scientific findings objectively in the light of the current scientific literature. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - critically appraise and analyse scientific literature; - systematically utilise appropriate research methodology; - expand an in-depth understanding and advanced scientific skills in a specialised area related to the profession of orthotics/prosthetics. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - design a research project appropriately; - conduct a research project in an appropriate manner taking into consideration all ethical issues required, time-planning and budgeting; - enhance analytical and critical reflective capacity in the chosen specialised area related to the profession of orthotics/prosthetics; - produce and present a piece of scientific writing, in the form of a dissertation, which is publishable. | ADDITIONAL NOTES | Pre-requisite Qualifications: First Degree with minimum 2nd class honours in a Medical or Health Science subject **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners. |
