DESCRIPTION This study-unit delves into the evolving landscapes of governance, both in terms of specific fields that require governing (e.g., environmental governance), and also in terms of new technologies of governance and power. It delves into issues related to technological advancement, shifting sociopolitical dynamics and the various interplays between national and global governance structures. Change, novelty and disruption are the keywords underlying this unit.

Key themes concern governance in the face of rapidly evolving technological advancement, intergroup relations, environmental issues and climate change, global conflict, cultural patterns, and the dynamic influence of non-state actors. The study-unit also investigates the ethical, socio-cultural, and strategic implications of these frontiers of governance.

Study-Unit Aims:

The capability of responding to novel governance scenarios is at the core of politicians鈥 and political activists鈥 skillsets. This study-unit aims to provide students with the theoretical and applied knowledge necessary to understand and enter in dialogue with different frontiers of governance. By the end of the course, students will have a more nuanced understanding of how governance systems are adapting to unprecedented challenges and how these adaptations are impacting the fabric of society.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explore the art and science involved in understanding novel frontiers of governance (environmental, intercultural, technological, etc.);
- Deepen and widen the knowledge and application of techniques related to the understanding of different political dynamics;
- Comprehend political discourse from different angles and decipher the political content of mass/social media communications;
- Examine the impact of media coverage of politics on different audiences, particularly as relating to novel frontiers of governance.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Develop fundamental skills in understanding how technologies of governance adapt over time;
- Foster a skills鈥 set that is complimentary to persuasive politics in different domains;
- Undertake scientific research on different frontiers of governance, in ways that respect the specificity of the topics under study;
- Be committed to ethical conduct when engaging in politics in novel domains.
