| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit provides final-year students reading for the Bachelor of Commerce in Public Policy with a structured opportunity to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical experience. Through a supervised work placement, students will gain direct exposure to the professional environments, processes, and practices of organisations engaged in public policy formulation, implementation, and evaluation. This study-unit consists of: - Ninety (90) hours of supervised work within a public, parastatal, private organisation, or a non-governmental organisation. Students will be mentored and monitored by both workplace and academic supervisor/s to ensure a meaningful and developmental experience; - Ten (10) hours of report-writing and reflective analysis designed to consolidate work-based learning with the academic insights acquired through campus-based study. These hours will be guided by a campus-based mentor. Students will not be remunerated beyond any approved stipends during the work period. They are not permitted to undertake overtime work during this wok-based learning period.. All work assignments, mentoring arrangements and the work-based period will take place during the academic year. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit is intended to: - Provide students with experiential learning opportunities within professional organisational settings; - Enable students to critically reflect on issues of policy-making, management, and governance as encountered in practice; - Strengthen analytical, organisational, and communication competencies relevant to policy environments; - Promote professional engagement and networking within the public, private and third sectors; - Encourage participation in organisational projects, initiatives, and events that align with the student’s area of study. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Analyse and articulate the purpose, operational structures, and key functions of their placement organisation; - Apply theoretical and conceptual frameworks from their academic studies to interpret professional practices observed during the work experience; - Reflect critically on their learning experience, identifying areas of professional growth, strength, and further development. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Complete assigned tasks to professional standards and within agreed time frames; - Communicate effectively in professional and academic contexts, both orally and in writing; - Demonstrate initiative and problem-solving ability in addressing workplace challenges; - Exhibit interpersonal and self-management skills within diverse organisational settings; - Critically evaluate professional relationships and ethical considerations encountered during the work-experience; - Through work-based learning, students develop essential skills in time management and learn to navigate multiple demands effectively. |
