DESCRIPTION | This study unit takes students on a journey from conception to adolescence. It provides a general understanding of the current theoretical issues and research findings in developmental psychology within a lifespan, biopsychosocial perspective. It gives students a broad understanding of child psychology and the psychology of adolescence. Themes underlying the study unit will be: research strategies for use with children, and adolescents; theoretical issues in child and adolescent development; current debates and topics in child and adolescent development Tentative Course Outline PART 1: Child Development Theoretical and research issues in the study of childhood. The material presented will focus on the basic questions asked in the study of child development, neo-natal and post natal development; the physical, cognitive, personality and social and moral development of the child; the ecology of development, the child within the family system and the impact of the broader culture Tentative Course Outline PART 2: Adolescence Theoretical and research issues in the study of adolescence; physical and sexual development, adolescent sexuality and pregnancy, health issues and risky behaviour; cognitive and moral development, schooling and achievement; developmental changes in self concept and the quest for self-definition, relationships with parents and process towards independence, relationships with peers and peer pressure, personality development; the impact of family system and broader social context on adolescent development.
